What?

A four part, dramatic/comedy series from Canadian "auteur" Ken Finkleman focusing on the corruption of the media,as seen through the eyes of George Findlay, a documentary director.  It stars Ken Finkleman and Leah Pinsent (daughter of Gordon) in the roles of George and Diane, respectively.  The style of the series intersplices scathing social satire , with dramatic allusions to the films of  Fellini and other neo-surrealistic filmmakers. The work itself defies description, one could classify it as either drama, or satire, or, increasingly both. The final episode is a 90 (68 minutes running time) "movie", which shows George's meltdown, in his personal life, and also in the making of a film about documentaries, in the style of Fellini's Otto e Mezzo (8 1/2).

Where?

The setting for "More Tears" is quite nebulous...the actual location is not given, although some references are made to Canadian events and culture.  Even so, much of the program has a surrealistic neo-European flair, as many of the characters speak with the accent of the European élites, and have the same type of ideas as people removed from the North American mold.

Framing the satire on the media (when George and his crew are on the road working on a story), George also has intellectual discussions about politics, immorality and love with his friend Shaffik in a small café.  These segments are the most profound (and quotable) of the series, as Shaffik acts as Greek chorus to George's manipulations and self-obsessiveness.

When?

"More Tears" aired in Canada, beginning on Monday March 30th, 1998 at 9:30 pm on CBC, and running weekly until April 14th, 1998.  The series concluded with a 90 minute special on Sunday April 20th, 1998.

George Findlay's character however, lives on in Finkleman's new dramatic series, Foolish Heart.
