On the night table...

Milan Kundera - The Unbearable Lightness of Being

This novel chronicles the lives and loves of four characters, and their connections to one another.  We have Tomas, an insatiable womanizer, but a man who also loves only his wife, the wife, Tereza, who puts up with Tomas' infidelities on the surface, but privately loathes his other lovers, Tomas' mistress Sabina, an artist, and her faithful lover Franz.  Throughout the novel, Kundera uses his characters in order to explore deeper ideas about love, and the fortuitiousness of our existence.

This description does not begin to do this novel justice, Kundera's work is intelligent, darkly comic, and gives the reader opportunity to question the role of coincidence in life, and the true definition of love.

Daniel Paisner - Horizontal Hold (Out of Print)

An insiders view into the process of creating, writing, and shooting a network television pilot.  This non-fiction book is a fascinating run-down of the creation of a pilot episode of "E.O.B", a smart sitcom about the lives of presidential speechwriters.  Peppered with interviews with producer Bruce Palthrow, this book gives a slightly cynical, fresh look at what REALLY goes on with network TV.
